"Never Again" becomes "How did this happen?"

The question is sometimes raised (but not nearly often enough) of how the people of Germany could allow the Holocaust to occur right under their noses without knowing anything about it.  I suspect the answer is that they were willfully blind, that they refused to listen to anyone trying to raise awareness about what the German gov’t was doing.  They probably labelled such people as “kooks” and “conspiracy theorists”, and cast aspersions on their patriotism and intelligence level.  Then those who were trying to raise awareness were “disappeared” by the gov’t, and so “normal” people could get back to their lives without having to deal with uncomfortable ideas about what their gov’t might be doing.  After all, there are systems in place to keep the gov’t from ever really doing anything really wrong, right?
